I’ll let you know next week when it arrives. The Sonnet card more than likely is using the XIO2213 chipset and it just might work. There is no mention on UAD’s website about being able running the Satellite on a Windows laptop, but I figured I might get lucky.

The next phase involved purchasing a Sonnet FireWire 800 ExpressCard for my Windows 7 laptop. But if it works, then I don’t need to worry about that. I am well aware that if I have any issues with this configuration UAD will not provide me support because I am not on a “qualified” system, card, or DAW. So I installed the card on that machine and sure enough, the Windows 7 machine saw the device and the plugins loaded with no issues. Granted the FireWire card was not “qualified” by UAD, but it did have the Texas Instrument XIO2213 chipset that they specified. With that, I went ahead and purchased the UAD-2 Satellite Duo. On top of that, I recently discovered that I had a PCIe FireWire 800 card lying around. It sure would be nice to work on mixes during down time there and have the ability to show the plugins and my mixes to my classes. Sure the Satellite could work on my Mac, but what if I wanted to use it on my backup Windows system that I keep at the College. With that in mind, I started thinking about the Satellite. So I tried once again and this everything worked wonderfully. Last month UAD release version 6.5 which clearly stated that it resolved a DSP issues with Sonar. But I also remembered that 6.4 was their first attempt at 64-bit support and that later versions should improve. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed with results and considered for a while dropping UAD. They made a note about my problem and closed the case.

I sent a support request to UAD and found out that they are “officially” supporting only Cubase and Pro Tools on both operating systems. Now I will admit that when I installed version 6.4 I had nothing but problems with Sonar.
In November UAD released version 6.4 which brought 64-bit support to Windows AND allowed Windows users to use the Satellite and/or Apollo on their systems provided they had a “qualified” FireWire card. However, this was not the only motivation. The Duo would allow me to supplement the Laptop Solo card on my Mac Mini and thus increase my UAD plugin power. My latest acquisition is the UAD-2 Satellite Duo. I thought it appropriate that I follow my own advice from a month ago and make sure that all plugins I get can be used across multiple machines.
